After having completed his studies in the visual arts, Marius Harton explored various forms of artistic expression before focusing on wood sculpture.  Fascinated by the esthetic qualities of wood that has been altered by natural elements; he brings out the singular beauty of raw organic material.

Moored to the foreshores of the Kamouraska region, his imagination responds to the river and its migratory birds.  Selected during the fall high tides, driftwood, floating castaways, are what form his collection “Mémoire d’eau salée”. He preserves the identity of this nautical wood; its oceanic origins.  Skilled driftwood salvage, it is then smoothed, sculpted, polished and oiled.

His fascinating discovery of peat bog wood, the product of a thousand years in the earth, inspired his collection “Mémoire fertile”.  Marius elevates this organic matter to convey the living feeling of a wood that carries within it the fingerprint of time; like a bridge between the ages.

By the richness of its colours, its unusual shapes and its unpredictable textures, eroded wood offers an exceptional range of sculptural possibilities.  As driftwood from the beach or buried root, this wood bears substance and continuity.

Marius Harton’s work is an innovative marriage of the contemporary and visual art forms.  His collections put forward unique pieces, merging originality with original material.
