Gil Robitail

Gil Robitail was born in Roberval in 1954 and died in 2019.

In 1972, he studied technical drawing and architecture in Alma. Co-founder of the comic book magazine "Tomahac"  in 1973, he also became a member of the Songwriters Association of Canada. He has always pursued his career as a painter and that of a musician.

Gil Robitail's paintings delight the eye, warm the soul and fascinate with the luminous gaiety they project.  He draws his inspiration mainly from the landscapes of Charlevoix: he is literally captivated by the marriage of the river and the mountains.

His work is undoubtedly inspired by the current "contemporary landscape" that the painters of the Institute of Figurative Arts have exploited so well. In his realistic pictographic art style, his masters are Paul Tex Lecor, Léo Ayotte and Saint-Gilles. His traditional subject is spread out in soft layers of colour, but it is the modern form that prevails. His dynamic compositions take us on a journey through vast expanses and the depth of his paintings illustrates Quebec's great outdoors. The complex treatment of shadow and light makes his painting incomparable.
