Gilles Marcou

Marcou was probably predestined to paint. Everyone in his family drew. He remembers having fun in his youth making caricatures and then painting. But even though all interests him, he also touches on engraving, stained glass, video and cinema. He even made a foray into writing and poetry. 

With two thousand kilometres of cross-country skiing in winter, thousands of paddles on his kayak to brush the seashore, then endless rides on his bike in Canada, the United States and France: nature certainly is his main source of inspiration. When a scene catches his attention, Marcou pulls out of his bag his sketch notebook. Afterwards, he has to settle in his studio to bring to life the images that haunt his mind. 

He particularly likes the theme of birds... He says: "Birds speak to people's hearts, they have an endearing side. They are the only free animals that we meet so frequently and so closely. They bring life, colour and spontaneity even to the most urbanized places." 

Marcou tries in each of his works to create a poetic universe where the message remains open and positive. The bits of stories he writes on his paintings add meaning to the image, without explaining everything... It's up to the observer to create his own story. His greatest desire is that the person who acquires one of his works will be happy to look at it and that they draw hope and energy from it.
