Born in 1970 in Armagh, Quebec, Rock Therrien currently resides in Montreal. Therrien made the leap into art in elementary school by winning competitions. Self-taught, the young painter devoted himself mainly to the creation of large paintings featuring characters with rounded shapes; he recreates fun and wacky situations where it is often possible to recognize yourself.
In his creative process, Rock designs an outline that he sketches beforehand on the canvas. Subsequently, he works with matter and colours using a pictorial technique of his own. His characters evolve into another era and to reinforce the idea of time that has already passed, he creates an effect of wear by sanding his already very textured works. In love with curves, he engraves patterns of circular shapes that he adorns with signs and decorates with touches of abstract colors. Each canvas represents an important layering of materials & techniques. Rock likes to reveal his collage work, his pencil sketches and even his cement applications. For him, it is his way of showing the construction of his painting.
The artist's works are conceived as messages to be decoded and for the painter, each painting tells its own story. His painting possesses several levels of understanding and contains clues that are discovered as time progresses. At first, Rock seeks to capture the viewer's attention through the theme and colors, and then a humorous wink completes the scene. He explains that all these elements inspire him, and motivate him to create and create new pieces.
