Viviane Gruais

Originally from France, Viviane Gruais has been working and living in Quebec City since 2010. After receiving several trainings in visual arts by her parents. multidisciplinary artists and teachers at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, she began literary studies that would eventually bring her back to painting in 1998.

The artist's work is mainly inspired by the reading of the landscape and the territory, both urban and landscape. Territory, memory, geodesy of the terrain, outlines, footprint, all these connotations lead her to purify and subtract the eye invasive to live a new dialogue with the panorama. The pictorial writing that emerges immediately becomes a frame, the masses soothe, the voids and the solids are drawn, collide and end up transcribing the essential of the feeling in this timeless decoding. Her creativity is constantly renewed by the contemplation of nature. These living forces ranging from birth to transformation, from blossoming to aging matter lead her to create landscape states combining lightness, strength and dynamism. The whole creative process fascinates the artist. Viviane has always loved to combine and integrate materials into her work. The integration of sand, papers (books, poems, newspapers, etc.) painted with tar, ash and inks give some of her works a primitive language. In her latest work on transparent acrylic plate, she attempts to freeze the footprint and memory of the landscape in time.

Viviane Gruais has more than 80 solo and group exhibitions at both national and international levels. Her work is continuously shown on two continents: in Bulgaria in Razgrad, in Russia at the David Ru Foundation in Moscow, in Italy at the Pallazo Farnese Museum in Ortona and in Canada in Vancouver, Ontario, Toronto, Montreal, St. Paul's Bay. She has received several awards and nominations, as well as international art critics for the singularity of her work. In 2020, she is again selected to exhibit in Russia in Moscow and Japan at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre.
