Collection: Gilles Marcou

Marcou was undoubtedly predestined to paint. Everyone in his family drew. He remembers having fun, in his youth, drawing caricatures and then devoting himself to painting. But since everything interests him, he also dabbles in engraving, stained glass, video, and cinema. He even makes a foray into writing and poetry.

Two thousand kilometers of cross-country skiing in winter, thousands of paddle strokes on his kayak to skim the seashore, then endless rides on his bike in Canada, the United States and France: nature is undoubtedly his main source of inspiration. When a scene catches his eye, Marcou takes his sketchbook out of his bag. Afterwards, he immediately has to settle down in his studio to bring to life the images that haunt his mind.

He particularly likes the theme of birds... He explains: “Birds speak to people's hearts, they have an endearing side. They are the only free animals that we encounter so frequently and so closely. They bring life, color and spontaneity even to the most urbanized places.”

In each of his works, Marcou strives to create a poetic universe where the message remains open and positive. The bits of history he writes on his canvases add meaning to the image, without explaining everything... It's up to the viewer to create their own story. His greatest desire is that the person who acquires one of his works will be happy to look at it and will draw hope and energy from it.
