Rock Therrien
Born in 1970 in Armagh, Quebec, Rock Therrien currently resides in Montreal. Therrien made the leap into art in elementary school by winning competitions. Self-taught, the young painter focuses primarily on creating large paintings featuring rounded figures; he recreates fun and zany situations in which it is often possible to identify with them.
In his creative process, Rock designs a scene that he first sketches on the canvas. He then works with the material and colors using his own pictorial technique. Rock's characters evolve in another era, and to reinforce the idea of time that has already passed, he creates a worn effect by sandblasting his already highly textured works. A lover of curves, he engraves circular patterns that he adorns with signs and decorates with touches of abstract color. Each canvas represents a significant layering of materials and techniques. Rock likes to give a glimpse of his collage work, his pencil sketches, and even his cement applications. For him, this is his way of showing the construction of his painting.
The artist's works are conceived as messages to be decoded, and for the painter, each painting tells its own story. His painting has several levels of understanding and contains clues that are discovered as we go along. Initially, Rock seeks to capture the viewer's attention through the theme and colors, then a humorous wink completes the scene. He explains that all these elements together inspire him and motivate him to create new works.
