Collection: Shinah Lee

Originally from South Korea, she immigrated to Montreal at the age of 13. A quiet and reserved teenager, she suddenly found herself confronted with the excitement of experiencing a new culture: different faces and landscapes, which from then on fueled her artistic explorations. She enthusiastically began studying art at Dawson College, feeling ready to make her place in Montreal's artistic community. She then continued her studies in graphic arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal in 2002.

In her twenties, having become a graphic artist, Shinah continued to refine her sensibility by traveling the city to capture the energy and inspiration that she was able to render through hundreds of sketches and drawings. Her curiosity about the graphic possibilities of her profession led her to develop her natural talent for color, textures and composition. Following the death of her father, her art took on a previously unsuspected emotional dimension, which helped to define her personal style that she has been developing for several years. Using the iconography of flowers as a representation of her emotions, a metaphor for life, death and love.

Shinah begins her works on the floor, using happy accidents of pigments as a backdrop. Then she hangs the canvas on the wall, rotating it until she is satisfied with its composition and the vitality that emanates from the work. Then she adds colors, in a very rapid and instinctive gesture, almost fueled by urgency. Shinah's painting is inspired by the images and vibrations she perceives from the world and from city life. A flower, but above all, a spontaneous emotion through which the artist shares her feelings about love and life.
